Socialism and social democracy

The term socialism, used from the 1830s onwards in France and England, was directly related to what was called the social question, in essence the problem that the emergence of competitive market societies did not create liberty, equality and fraternity for all citizens, requiring the intervention of politics and social reform to tackle social problems, injustices and grievances a topic on which Jean-Jacques Rousseau discourses at length in his classic work The Social Contract. Originally the term socialist was often used interchangeably with co-operative, mutuality, associations and collectivist.
The term social democracy originally referred to the political project of extending democratic forms of association to the whole of society, substituting popular sovereignty, the universal franchise and social ownership for the rule of a propertied class which had exclusive voting rights.

Painting

Painting taken literally is the practice of applying color to a surface such as paper, canvas, wood, glass, or other. However, when used in an artistic sense, the term painting means the use of this activity in combination with drawing, composition and other aesthetic considerations in order to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner.
Painting is used as a mode of representing, documenting and expressing all the varied intents and subjects that are as numerous as there are practitioners of the craft. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational. photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolism, emotion or be political in nature. A large portion of the history of painting is dominated by spiritual motifs and ideas; sites of this kind of painting range from artwork depicting mythological figures on pottery to biblical scenes rendered on the interior walls and ceiling of The Sistine Chapel to depictions of the human body itself as a spiritual subject.

Rome

Rome is the capital city of Italy and of the Lazio province, as well as the country's major and most crowded commune, with concerning 2.5 million residents. It is situated in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula, where the river anyone joins the Tiber. As one of the prime cities in the European Union, the Commune did Roma has a gross domestic creation of €97 billion in the year 2005, equal to 6.7% of Italy's GDP the highest quantity of GDP produced by any single Italian commune. The current Mayor of Rome is Walter Vectoring.

According to fairy tale, the city of Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Rebus on April 21, 753 BC. Archeological proof supports claims that Rome was inhabited since the 8th century BC and earlier. The city was the support of Roman civilization that shaped the largest and longest-lasting empire of classical antiquity that reached its maximum extent in 117. The city was essential and in charge for the spread of Greco-Roman culture that endures to this day. Rome is also recognized with Christianity and the Catholic Church and has been the Episcopal seat of the Popes since the 1st century. The State of the Vatican City, the monarch territory of the Holy See and smallest nation in the world, is an enclave of Rome.

Health

Health is the practical and metabolic efficiency of an organism, at any moment in time, at both the cellular and global levels. All individual organisms, from the simplest to the most complex, vary among optimum health and zero health.

In the medical field, health is normally defined as an organism's ability to capably respond to challenges and effectively restore and sustain a "state of balance," known as homeostasis.

Another broadly accepted definition of health is that of the World Health Organization "WHO". It states that "health is a state of absolute physical, mental and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or infirmity". In more recent years, this statement has been customized to include the ability to lead a "socially and economically creative life." The WHO definition is not without criticism, as some dispute that health cannot be defined as a state at all, but must be seen as a process of continuous alteration to the changing demands of living and of the changing meanings we give to life. The WHO definition is therefore measured by many as an idealistic goal rather than a realistic intention.

An increasing measure of the health of populations is height, which is powerfully regulated by nutrition and health care, among other average of living and quality of life matters. The study of human growth, its regulators and its implications is known as auxology.

Clothing

Clothing is defined, in its broadest logic, as coverings for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for the hands, feet and head. Humans almost universally wear clothes, which are also known as dress, garments, attire, or apparel. People wear clothing for functional as well as for social reasons. Clothing protects the vulnerable nude human body from the extremes of weather, other features of our environment, and for safety reasons. But every article of clothing also carries a civilizing and social meaning.
People also decorate their bodies with structure or foundation, perfume, and other decoration they also cut, dye, and arrange the hair of their heads, faces, and bodies, and sometimes also mark their skin. All these decorations add to the overall effect and message of clothing, but do not constitute clothing per se.
Articles approved rather than damaged are normally counted as fashion garnishes rather than as clothing. Jewelry and spectacles are usually counted as accessories as well, even though in ordinary speech these items are described as being worn rather than carried.

Lighthouse of Alexandria

The Pharos of Alexandria was a tower built in the 3rd century BC on the island of Pharos in Alexandria, Egypt to supply as that port's landmark, and later, its lighthouse.

With a height variously projected at between 115 and 135 meters it was among the tallest man-made structures on Earth for many centuries, and was identified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World by traditional writers.

It ceased working and was largely destroyed as a result of an earthquake in 1375; some of its remains were found on the floor of Alexandria's Eastern Harbour by divers in 1994. More of the residues have subsequently been exposed by satellite imaging.

His design of minarets in many early Islamic mosques many centuries later followed a similar three-stage design to that of the Pharos, attesting to the building's broader architectural authority.

Computer

A computer is a device for manipulating data according to a list of instructions. A list of computer instructions planned to perform some task is known as a program. When programs are contained in storage that may be easily customized by the computer itself, the device is said to have Von Neumann architecture. The ability to execute stored programs that is, programmability makes computers extremely versatile and distinguishes them from calculators. The Church Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: Any computer with a certain minimum potential is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can execute. Therefore, computers with potential and complexity ranging from that of a personal digital assistant to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks so long as time and storage capacity are not considerations.
Computers take several physical forms. Early electronic computers were the mass of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers. Today, computers can be made little enough to fit into a wrist watch and powered from a watch battery.

Construction

Under project architecture and civil engineering, construction means building or assembly of any infrastructure on a site or sites. Though this may be thought of as a single activity, in fact construction is a feat of multitasking. Normally the job is managed by the construction manager, supervised by the project director, design engineer or project architect. While these people work in offices, every construction project requires a large number of laborers, carpenters, and other skilled tradesmen to complete the physical job of construction.
For the successful execution of a project functional planning is essential. Those concerned with the design and execution of the infrastructure in question must consider the environmental impact of the job, the unbeaten scheduling, budgeting, site safety, availability of materials, logistics, inconvenience to the public caused by construction delays, preparing tender documents, etc.

University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is a coeducational public research university in Toronto, Ontario. It is the largest university in Canada by enrollment. St. George is located in Downtown Toronto surrounding Queen's Park and the Ontario Legislature. Its two other campuses, the University of Toronto Scarborough and the University of Toronto at Mississauga are located in the eastern and western ends of the Greater Toronto Area.
The institution was founded as King's College by John Strachan. Its name was changed to the University of Toronto, after it ended ties with the Church of England to become a secular institution. University College was created as a constituent college and over time, the formerly independent Trinity College, Victoria University and St. Michael's College became federated with the university.
A university ranking by Newsweek International places the University of Toronto worldwide and first in Canada and similar academic rankings consistently place the university among the world's best. Artificial larynx, single-lung transplant, nerve transplant, artificial pancreas, chemical laser, G-suit, the first practical electron microscope, and the extraction of insulin.

Deregulation of Natural Gas

The main objective of deregulation of natural gas is to discuss the key points nearby the deregulation of the natural gas industry. How the industry performed during a period of regulation and what transpired forcing a transform to deregulate them.

Deregulation is the de-emphasis of governmental oversight of actions in the private sector. It was known that regulation is where the government controls convinced aspects of the private sector, led to a monopolistic state amongst businesses and it was no longer viewed as productive with the modern growth of the economy. Combine this economic growth with rising oil prices, a growing dependency on natural gas, and technological advancements within the trade, and it becomes apparent why deregulation was in need to move in the late 1970s.

Gold

Gold is a extremely sought-after valuable metal that for many centuries has been used as money, a store of value and in ornaments. The metal occurs as nugget or grains in rocks and in alluvial deposits and is one of the coinage metals. It is a soft, glossy, yellow, dense, malleable, and ductile (trivalent and univalent) change metal. Modern manufacturing uses include dentistry and electronics. Gold forms the basis for a financial typical used by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Bank for International resolution (BIS). Its ISO currency code is XAU.
Gold is a tinny element with a trait yellow color, but can also be black or ruby when finely alienated, while colloidal solutions are intensely tinted and often purple. These colors are the effect of gold's plasmon frequency lying in the visible range, which causes red and yellow glow to be reflected, and blue light to be engrossed. Only silver colloids show the same interactions with light, albeit at a shorter occurrence, making silver colloids yellow in color.
Gold is a good conductor of temperature and electricity, and is not precious by air and most reagents. Heat, damp, oxygen, and most corrosive agents have very little chemical effect on gold, making it well-suited for use in coins and jewelry; equally, halogens will chemically alter gold, and aqua regia dissolve it.
Pure gold is too soft for ordinary use and is hard-boiled by alloying with silver, copper, and other metals. Gold and its lots of alloys are most often used in jewelry, coinage and as a typical for monetary exchange in various countries. When promotion it in the form of jewelry, gold is calculated in karats (k), with pure gold being 24k. However, it is more commonly sold in lower capacity of 22k, 18k, and 14k. A lower "k" indicates a higher percent of copper or silver assorted into the alloy, with copper being the more typically used metal between the two. Fourteen karat gold-copper alloy will be almost identical in color to definite bronze alloys, and both may be used to produce polish and added badges. Eighteen karat gold with a high copper content is establish in some traditional jewelry and will have a distinct, though not dominant copper cast, giving an attractively warm color. A comparable karat weight when alloyed with silvery metals will appear less humid in color, and some low karat white metal alloys may be sold as "white gold", silvery in exterior with a slightly yellow cast but far more resistant to decay than silver or sterling silver. Karat weights of twenty and higher is more general in modern jewelry. Because of its high electrical conductivity and confrontation to decay and other desirable combinations of physical and chemical properties, gold also emerged in the late 20th century as an vital industrial metal, particularly as thin plating on electrical card associates and connectors.

Infrared

Infrared (IR) emission is electromagnetic emission of a wavelength longer than that of noticeable light, but shorter than that of radio waves. The name means "below red" (from the Latin infra, "below"), red being the color of detectable light of longest wavelength. Infrared radiation spans three instructions of magnitude and has wavelengths between about 750 nm and 1 mm.
These divisions are suitable by the different human response to this radiation: near infrared is the area closest in wavelength to the radiation detectable by the human eye, mid and far infrared are gradually further from the visible regime. Other definitions follow different physical mechanisms (emission peaks, vs. bands, water absorption) and the newest follow technical reasons (The common silicon detectors are sensitive to about 1,050 nm, while Inga As sensitivity starts around 950 nm and ends between 1,700 and 2,600 nm, depending on the specific configuration). Unfortunately the international standards for these specifications are not currently obtainable.
The boundary between visible and infrared light is not precisely defined. The human eye is markedly less responsive to light above 700 nm wavelength, so longer frequencies make irrelevant contributions to scenes illuminated by common light sources. But particularly strong light (e.g., from lasers, or from bright daylight with the visible light removed by colored gels [1]) can be detected up to approximately 780 nm, and will be apparent as red light. The onset of infrared is defined (according to different standards) at different values typically between 700 nm and 780 nm.

Animal Rights Terrorism

Animals through out the world are terrorized day per day, whether it’s for the use of cheap food, safe medicines or the making of a new product. The opinion of many people is that the use of animals for medicine and product making can be decreased. Because of not able to help the helpless animals in the factories, farms, or laboratories when being put to wrong use is physical cruelty. The Cruelty which has been shown to animals is degrading and considered to be wrong.
Animal Rights are much more important, if not equally important to human rights. Animals has been included among multi-cellular organisms that have a defined shape, limited growth, can move voluntarily, actively acquire food and digest it internally. They are also having senses and nervous systems that allow them to respond to stimuli, as humans require with great similarity.

Deserve to live

What the fear we have is not suffering or even death….. And what we fear is that we have wasted life ….
That our highest calling will may go unanswered” one day in a dream I met the most beautiful soul She whispered “do you know what your purpose of being a human being“. So try to fill the world with your awareness I remember thinking not too terribly long ago that I knew everything and I had it all figured out. I have traveled to many different places through out the world. Two years ago I began to realize the world is not all about me and my life, and what mood I happen to be in at the time. I need a family of my own to carry on that legacy. The lovable memories I have are helping others in their time of need whether it be money or time.
When I first thought about why I might have born and exist or what is my purpose is in life.
My personal contemplation defines the unique meaning of my life, path, passage, journey, quest or adventure. I also donated time to the soup kitchen feeding dinner to the homeless. To live, on this earth; We are just how truly lucky I am that all of the circumstances aligned that I grew up in such a prosperous country, in a wonderful family, with the opportunity to fulfill my dreams. The small box in which I was living in became opened. My parents confirmed me with knowledge to excel in my adult life. And also I was blessed as a child and my parents provided me with the best life that they could give me. I lived in downtown and see people cold and hungry. I am a child augmenting all of the great things my parents have done. During the holiday season seems to be the time where everyone looks around to the needy, although these people need help year round. But, now he might have lost that and it is time for me to take care of him and give back what he has given to me. The country in which we live in today is filled with materialism and over abundance of wealth that other countries could only dream of.

MBA – overview!

Every student entering business school to get their MBA degree will require various skills and have basic expertise in particular areas. The level of the mathematical skills will vary depending upon the choice of your program. Many MBA programs need algebra, statistics, and most likely calculus. You may want to revive your skills if they are in query before entering an MBA program, because joining an MBA program without basic skills will be a bit tougher to get through. Most business schools needs the use of private computers throughout your MBA program, in some cases many school will require that you possess your own laptop. Though the degree to which you use a computer will differ, you should be contented with the complete knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Every school will provide you their minimum basic necessities for computer skills.
Business schools today try to impersonate the business setting in their academic programs by using student teams. As businesses more and more twisted to teams to work on projects and to solve troubles, MBA programs have converted a huge portion of course work from individual work to teamwork. Many masters of business administration programs now contain teambuilding training as team building workshops, or as a theme in managerial performance courses. Teams are formed mainly for the reason of one project in one course or by remaining together, working on multiple courses for months. In this competitive situation of Business administration programs, the collaboration of students in team building movements is often complicated. Students that take part in team activities find that working with someone else takes up a lot of educational time.
The business fundamentals are taught in every MBA program. Economics, finance, accounting, organizational behavior, marketing, and statistics are in the basic range for master of business administration programs. In business school these subjects are considered a foundation group of courses required for each and every candidate.
These core courses make up the first year of study in a two-year full-time program. In some programs, students who have a prior background in business can by pass some or all of the core courses on the basis of either a special examination or an evaluation of the undergraduate transcript. In some programs, students who have a previous backdrop in business can go around some or all of the foundation courses on the basis of either a special examination or an assessment of the undergraduate record.

Babur

Babur:

He was born on the year 1483 on February 14 in the town of Andijan in the valley of Fergana which is in modern Uzbekistan. He was the eldest son of Omar Sheikh Mīrzā who was the ruler of Fergana Valley where he describes it as short and stout, round-bearded and fleshy faced. Babur mother name was Qutlugh Nigar Khanum. Although Babur hailed from the Barlas tribe which was of Mongol origin, his tribe had embraced Turkic and Persian culture, converted to Islam and resided in a region known as Turkestan. His mother tongue was the Chaghatai language and he was equally at home in Persian, the two linguae francae of the Timurid elite. His famous memories was written in the Baburnama, in the former language, that of his birthplace.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs), also known as IEEE 802.15.1. Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and digital cameras via a secure, globally unlicensed short range radio frequency. The name Bluetooth was born from the 10th century king of Denmark, King Harald Bluetooth (whose surname is sometimes written as Bluetooh).

Bluetooth is a radio standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power class dependent: 1 meter, 10 meters, 100 meters) based around low-cost transceiver microchips in each device. Bluetooth lets these devices communicate with each other when they are in range.

Bluetooth is in a variety of new products such as phones, printers, modems, and headsets to name a few. Bluetooth is acceptable for situations when two or more devices are in close proximity with each other and don’t require high bandwidth. Bluetooth is most commonly used with cell phones, either using a Bluetooth headset or transferring files from phones to computers. Instead of that, Wi-Fi uses the same radio frequencies as Bluetooth, but with higher power consumption resulting in a stronger connection. As mentioned earlier, Wi-Fi is sometimes called a wireless Ethernet. Wi-Fi is popular among the computing world, virtually all new laptop computers come with Wi-Fi built in, and all desktop computers are able to be adapted to have a Wi-Fi connection. However cell phones do not have this ability.

The Applications of Bluetooth are:

Wireless control between a cell phone and a hands free headset.
Wireless networking between PCs with a little bandwidth.
Wireless communications with PC input & output devices such as mice, keyboards and printers.
Replacement of traditional wired serial communications.
Sending commands and software to the upcoming LEGO Mind storms NXT instead of infra red.
Transfer of files between devices via OBEX.

Early Stages of a pregnant woman and her health

Pregnancy is not an easy job for a woman. Starting from conception to birth, a woman's body carries out the most miraculous process of fertilization, implantation and the maturity and growth of her baby (or babies). Her body is her baby's dwelling place for the next nine months (or around 40 weeks) and the occurrences of pregnancy turn into a journey of many new physical feelings. Whether it is first, second, third (or more) pregnancy, her body will respond in a different way to each individual pregnancy. So health of a pregnant woman is very important to be taken care of.

Throughout the first 12 weeks of pregnancy called the '1st trimester’, a woman's body adjust to present a fostering and protective environment for her baby to grow and develop. Seldom, the early signs of pregnancy can make a woman feel puzzled. This may be for the reason that many of the physical signs of in the early hours of pregnancy such as enlarged tender breasts, sensitivity of tiredness, overstuffed and perhaps experiencing spasms and/or pelvic uneasiness can be considered as normal pre-menstrual signs. In all these stages the health of the woman declines because she is not only feeding herself, also her little developing fetus.

They may also sense disgusted or sick, due to morning sickness. It is not unusual to feel unsure about what is 'normal' during the early stages of pregnancy development, and unfamiliar signs or sensations may trigger concerns about the health, of her and baby. It’s been proved by the Gynecologists that every woman's body will react in a different way to being pregnant. Many women find their early pregnancy symptoms very difficult to cope with, both at work and generally.

Due to continuous vomiting and nourishing the fetus the pregnant woman may be exhausted very easily. She has to constantly keep her energetic by maintaining a healthy diet schedule as prescribed by the physicians. She can have more fresh green vegetables and fruit juices to make her feel fresh and energetic. It’s always significant to make sure that she avoids drinking and smoking because whatever she has will be directly absorbed by the baby. Once the fetus starts developing she has to get primed for all the obstacles she has to experience throughout pregnancy. Many psychologists predict that a healthy pregnancy is not only from taking care of the nutrition for the pregnant women, more than that she has to be taken care from all the hassles in her family. It’s the duty of a loving husband to caress her comfortably and keep her happy always throughout the gestation period. This will not only make the woman feel happy and hopeful it will directly lead to the good development of the fetus.

Hypernova

Hypernova is an astronomical term whose meaning has been shifting. In the late 1990s, it was used to mean an explosion with energy of over 100 supernovae (1046 Joules). Such explosions were proposed to explain the exceptional brightnesses of gamma ray bursts. More recently, hypernova has been used to refer to an exceptionally large star that collapses at the end of its lifespan (this is known as a collapsar).

No hypernovae of the earlier type have been definitively observed, and the explanation has fallen from favor as it has become clear that gamma ray bursts are beamed into very narrow opening angles of less than 1% of a sphere, so that ordinary supernovae can power them.
In the collapsar model, the core of the star collapses directly into a black hole and two extremely energetic jets of plasma are emitted from its rotational poles at nearly the speed of light. These jets emit intense gamma rays, and are a candidate explanation for gamma ray bursts. In recent years a great deal of observational data on gamma ray bursts significantly increased our understanding of these events, and made clear that the collapsar model produces explosions that differ only in detail from more or less ordinary supernovae. Nevertheless, they continue to sometimes be referred to in the literature as hypernovae.

Since stars sufficiently large to collapse directly into a black hole are quite rare, hypernovae would likewise be rare, if they indeed occur. It has been estimated that a hypernova would occur in our galaxy every 200 million years.

Vacation Villas

A villa is a luxurious house built for the upper class people of Rome. An ancient author and Natural philosopher Mr. Pliny describes more in writtings about the Roman villas of the empire. He categorises the villas as two types they are the villa urbana and villa rustica. The villa urbana was a country seat which could easily be reached within a night or two from the Rome or another city. And the villa rustica is the farm house estate. These farm house estates are permanently occupied by the servants who had charge generally of the estate, which would center on the villa itself, perhaps these villas are seasonally occupied.

The dwelling quarters, consisting of several low buildings, included recreation facilities and lodgings for the servants. The villa rustica, which is the farmhouse type, had barns, orchards, and vineyards, and the villa urbana type which are used as a pleasure retreat had the incidental garden architecture adorned with fountains and sculptures.

There are other villas that originated during different periods like post-roman villas, renaissance villas, Palladio’s villas, English villas and modern villas.

3. Parents should take it as a part of their responsibility to teach the teens to use the credit card only in necessary & emergency situations. As the proverb goes “The keys to success is education”, parents must be patient enough to teach their children starting from the beginning the values of financial basics and the importance of spending money in a useful way. Experts say parents should take several steps before giving a credit card to their child. They should keep their child trained in various perspectives such as writing a check and tracking money, proper usage of a debit card, teach them how credit card works explaining them how the balance is paid within the grace period and other key terms such as late fees, etc. parents should not stop with this, they should instantly monitor the child’s usage and build up their level of responsibility. In summary credit card education would be good to keep the teens and make them use credit card in a clever way and be away from increasing unpaid balances.

Distiller Water Filters

Water distillers use electricity to heat tap water to boiling point. Generally the Impurities are left in the container and the purified contents go back to a clean container. They need a higher level of efficiency or Water purifiers and cannot give immediate supply, because the boiling process must be over before water is present. There are a number of reports in that distilled water is not fit for health because it takes away nutrients from the body, being the most 'unnatural' of water.

Ionized Water Filters are generally filtered using an acid and an alkaline. They run between the positive and the negative ends of the electrodes and get the charged and acidic water. They are formed using 70% alkaline water and 30% Acid water. Alkaline and Acidic waters have unusual properties and benefits, but anyway their respective uses could not be more different.

Back flush Water Filters are costlier compared to charcoal filter units, but justify this by their claims of longevity. They are highly durable and efficient.

Home Accents

Making judgments of value requires a basis for criticism: a way to determine whether the impact of the object on the senses meets the criteria to be considered art, whether it is perceived to be ugly or beautiful. Perception is always colored by experience, so a reaction to art as 'ugly' or 'beautiful' is necessarily subjective. The Framed Art is used as home accents.

Because of its elusive nature, "good" art is not always, or even regularly, appealing. In other words, it does not have to be "nice-looking", and often depicts terrible images made for social, moral, or thought-provoking reasons. Coat Hangers are used for home decorations.

Countless schools have proposed their own ways to define quality, yet they all seem to agree in at least one point once their aesthetic choices are accepted, the home decorations, value of the work of art is determined by its capacity to transcend the limits of its chosen medium in order to strike some universal chord (which, oddly enough, tends to be the most personal one).

Air cylinders

A collet is a sleeve with a cylindrical inside and a conical outside. The collet has kerf cuts along its length to allow it to expand and contract. A threaded section at the rear of the collet is used to pull it into a matching conical socket. As the collet is pulled into the socket, the collet will contract - gripping the contents of the inner cylinder. Collets are most commonly found on milling machines, lathes, wood routers, and precision grinders. Collets can also be obtained to fit Morse or Brown and Sharpe taper sockets.

Typically collets offer far higher levels of precision and accuracy than self-centering chucks, and have a far shorter setting up time than independent-jaw chucks. The penalty is that most collets can only accommodate a single size of workpiece. An exception is ER collets which typically have a working range of 1mm. Air cylinders or collet chucks are made to hold cylindrical work, but are available to hold square, hexagonal or octagonal work pieces.

Australia

The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the world's smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australia's neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast.
The continent of Australia has been inhabited for over 40,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the 17th century, the eastern half of the continent was claimed by the British in 1770 and officially settled as the penal colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were successively established over the course of the 19th century.
On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The current population of around 20.4 million is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
